This week marks the 78th… [more] birthday of Social Security, one of the most important and successful social programs in U.S. history. The landmark Social Security Act was signed into law by President Franklin D. Roosevelt on August 14, 1935.
Social Security’s birthday comes at a time of fiscal uncertainty in Washington, with automatic spending cuts known as sequestration taking a toll on vital programs like Meals on Wheels and home heating assistance, and some in Congress calling for cuts to Social Security and Medicare.
